Tonttu is our rendition of a classic Finnish christmas song. The original lyrics were written by Viktor Rydberg (1881 Swedish) and translated by Valter Juva (1906 Finnish). The original musical compositions were done by Lyyli Wartiovaara-Kallioniemi (1945). Our version tells a story of a tonttu (gnome/elf) that due to his inability to sleep, goes on a murderous rampage in a nearby house. We got the inspiration for this song from old Finnish legends about house-gnomes and elves. People used to believe that if the inhabitants of a house behaved badly, or in a rude manner, the house-gnome would take action and make the inhabitants aware of it's presence. One of the more brutal examples was that an unpleasant inhabitant would find himself skinned alive, and the gnome would leave the skin in the sauna of the house. This sparked the idea for this song, since most of our other songs deal with violence and murder. We altered the musical compositions to fit our own style, and rewrote the lyrics almost completely. Only the very first verse has been left untouched.
